Former K-1 Grand Prix champion Alistair Overeem will return for his third bout inside the Octagon when he takes on Jackson MMA heavyweight Travis Browne at UFC on FOX Sports 1 Saturday, August 17 at the TD Garden in Boston.
Currently ranked No. 5 among all UFC heavyweights, Overeem (14-1-1) made his UFC debut in October 2011 with a first round TKO win over Brock Lesnar. With the win Overeem earned himself a shot at the UFC heavyweight title versus Junior Dos Santos.
Prior to the fight with Dos Santos scheduled for May 2012, Overeem tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone, was suspended for nine months and lost his shot at the title. Overeem returned to action in February of this year against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva at UFC 156.
Overeem appeared to underestimate Silva’s skills and ended up paying for it during the fight. Silva took everything Overeem had for two rounds and by round three Overeem was completely gassed. Silva capitalized with a knockout win 25-seconds into the third.
Incidentally Browne (14-1-1) suffered the first loss of his career against “Bigfoot” Silva last October when the two headlined UFC on FX 5 in Minnesota. Silva scored a first round TKO win over Browne who tore his hamstring during the bout.
Browne finally got back in the Octagon in April, scoring a devastating knockout win via elbow strikes over longtime UFC vet Gabriel Gonzaga at the TUF 17 Finale. Browne is currently ranked No. 10 among UFC heavyweights and is 5-1-1 during his time with the promotion.
Aside from the Gonzaga fight, Browne’s biggest win to date is a first round knockout of Stefan Struve in May 2011 at UFC 130. He also fought to a draw with Cheick Kongo at UFC 120 in 2010.
Other bouts that have been announced for the FOX Sports 1 show include Matt Brown vs. Thiago Alves at welterweight and Joe Lauzon vs. Michael Johnson at lightweight. Stay close to ProMMAnow.com for more updates.
